Fairhaven Special Olympians Win 9 Medals at State Aquatics Championship at Ohio State
Athletes from Fairhaven Special Olympics in Trumbull County competed in the 43rd Annual Ohio Special Olympics Aquatics Meet on December 6th at the Ohio State University's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Over 500 swimmers from across the State of Ohio participated in this year's event, which is the largest in the nation.
Kathy Kinney of McDonald won gold in both of her events; the 25 meter butterfly (21.00 seconds) and the 50 meter freestyle (44.24 seconds).
Julie Verostko of Hubbard also won gold in the 25 freestyle (21.47 seconds) and she narrowly missed a second gold medal in the 50 meter freestyle with a second place finish (48.19 seconds).
Also earning two medals was Joey Verostko of Hubbard who won a silver medal in the 25 freestyle (27.10 seconds) and another silver medal in the 50 freestyle (1:00.46 seconds).
Silver medal winners in the 25 meter freestyle included Alicia Cunningham of Girard (31.13 seconds) and Melissa Baker of Youngstown (36.08 seconds). Marcus Wilson of Warren earned a bronze medal in the 25 meter freestyle (23.6 seconds). In the highly competitive freestyle races, Paul Colla of Mineral Ridge earned a 5th place ribbon in the 50 meter (1:03.08 seconds) and Tammy Barnes of Warren won a 5th place ribbon in her 25 meter race (58.76 seconds).
